As your NYC plumber, I can assure you that we get called out to deal with lots of clogged toilets. There’s nothing more distressing to the homeowner than a toilet that just won’t flush. Worse, sometimes toilets back up and over flow, leaving you with a nasty, nasty mess.
Every clogged toilet begins as a mystery. But when I get to the home and see that the family has a toddler or two running around, it’s a good clue as to what caused the mystery. Toilets are fascinating to toddlers. They’re generally either newly potty-trained or are going through the process of learning what they need to do. Parents and caregivers are actively encouraging toddlers to sit on the toilet. This is a big part of their life!
Best of all, from a toddler’s perspective, is the fact that when you flush the toilet, everything that’s inside it disappears with a big whoosh down the drain. Toddlers have a great imagination and limitless creativity when it comes to flushing objects down the drain. In my role as a NYC plumber, I’ve resolved clogs caused by hand towels and wash cloths, diapers, toys, pet food dishes, and some truly pricey items, including iPhones and car keys.
It’s important to spend time with your kids educating them on what goes into the potty and what doesn’t. Once an object has been flushed away, it’s gone forever – even if I can retrieve it, believe me, you don’t want it. Knowing that a beloved stuffed animal is never coming back can be traumatic for the little ones – if that heartache can be avoided with some education, let’s avoid it!
If you do suspect your child has flushed an object down the toilet and it’s acting strangely without being completely clogged, call us right away. Objects generally don’t dislodge on their own, and they can contribute to the formation of larger, more problematical clogs. We’ll come get your sewer drain pipes cleared right away for you!
