“You know how they say the road to … well, you know what they say about good intentions,” Harold laughed. “My wife’s mother wanted a new sink in her kitchen. I said that’s no so bad, we can that for her. So we order the sink, the faucet, the whole nine yards, and on Mother’s Day weekend, we go into the city, and I’m going to install this sink for her, right? No big deal – I’ve replaced a faucet before and that’s the most complicated part of the sink, right?” He laughed. “Wrong. The drain pipes underneath the sink just crumbled when I put the wrench on them. I mean, they turned to dust in my hands. I’m looking at my wife, because at this point I don’t know what to do. She said, “I guess we’re going to call the NYC plumbers now!”
Even if you have great DIY skills and have done your share of home repairs before, what seems like a simple plumbing job can very quickly get out of hand. As NYC plumbers, we can tell you that everyone needs help sometime. There are a lot of older homes in the five boroughs where the plumbing won’t necessarily look like what the YouTube tutorials or DIY Network tells you it should. Be aware too that NYC’s DOB has some fairly strict regulations about how plumbing needs to be done, and what type of repair jobs require a licensed master plumber.
“I thought we were looking at a major disaster, but the NYC plumbers we called were great. The guys came within the hour, and they totally understood what had gone wrong,” Harold explained. “I thought they’d be mocking me for screwing up the pipe, but apparently, this situation isn’t all that unusual. They repaired the drain pipe, finished up the sink installation, and wished my Mother in Law a Happy Mother’s Day. Who could ask for more than that?”
