Heavy Spring Rains Cause New York City Plumbing Problems

April 23, 2018 by Boris Mechanical

After a long winter, most New Yorkers are very happy to see spring arrive. However, heavy spring rains can cause problems with household plumbing in Manhattan and the other four boroughs. The two main areas of concern are your toilet and your basement. Here’s what you need to know, including when it’s time to call the New York City plumbers.

When Heavy Rains Means The Toilet Won’t Flush New York City has a fairly robust municipal sewer system. Still, heavy spring rains can deliver an overwhelming amount of water. When this happens, your toilet may flush slowly, incompletely, or not at all. In rare but extreme situations, your toilet may even back up and overflow when you try to flush it.

In these instances, there’s really not much that can be done to remedy the situation until the water levels in the city sewer system drop. If you’re not sure what’s causing your toilet to not flush, your plumbers in NYC will know – your call will most likely not be the first time they’ve heard about the situation!

Heavy Spring Rains Flood Basements, Lower Floors, Lobbies Prolonged heavy spring rains, as well as sudden intense cloud bursts that deliver a lot of water all at once, can result in water entering your home in unexpected ways. If your building has a basement, that’s often where the water will wind up. The problem with water in the basement is that your home’s electrical and heating systems can be damaged. Additionally, all of the stuff you’ve stored in the basement can get ruined. A flooded basement is dangerous, so you don’t want to deal with it yourself. New York City plumbers can provide assistance, particularly in the form of sump pump installation. Sump pumps remove water from your basement so nothing gets damaged.
