Kitchen Sink Clogs: What To Do

September 21, 2020 by Boris Mechanical

If you’ve ever found yourself staring at a kitchen sink just hoping and praying that the water would start draining out, you know how upsetting a clog can be.

Why Do Kitchen Sinks Clog?

Kitchen sink clogs form from the stuff that goes down the drain and sticks to the sides of the drain pipe. Big culprits? Grease, hair, and food scraps. If you have a garbage disposer you may think you’re never going to have to worry about kitchen sink clogs, but that’s not actually true. This is particularly true if someone puts an item down the drain that overwhelms the garbage disposal’s capacity – think things like silverware or chicken bones.

A Note About Drain Cleaning

As you might imagine, the cleanliness of your kitchen drain pipes should be a top concern. You don’t want grease or other materials building up in your pipe and stopping the water from draining out. The way to prevent this is drain cleaning, which is a service your NYC plumber can provide on an annual or semi-annual basis.

However, not every drain gets cleaned when it should. And sometimes clogs happen fast – particularly if you’ve got a sticky food like pumpkin that’s found its way down the drain. When this happens, you can try dislodging the clog with a plunger or using a chemical drain cleaner available from a home improvement store. This should be sufficient for a minor clog. If it doesn’t work, it’s time to bring in your NYC plumber and have them handle the job.

Kitchen sinks aren’t the only sinks that get clogged. Bathroom sinks and utility room sinks also get clogged from time to time – particularly in cases where the utility room sees a lot of use and significant quantities of dirt, sand, grime, or grease get washed away. This includes any sink that has mopped buckets emptied into it, as well as floor drains. To fix tough clogged sinks fast, call your NYC plumber. Emergency service is available.
