You know how there are some people who seem like they hear the train coming before anyone else? Our sense of hearing is pretty amazing. Listening to the noises in our environment can provide valuable clues about what’s actually going on. Some sounds are warnings. They let us know trouble is on the way.
When it comes to your home’s plumbing, these are the warning sounds you want to be aware of:
Rushing, Cascading Water
If it sounds like you’ve got a waterfall going on in your place, and you can’t see where it’s coming from, call the plumber. You may have a serious leak, ruptured pipe, or compromised water supply line going on, all of which need to be addressed immediately, before lasting damage is done to your home.
Gurgling Drains
If your drains gurgle after you’ve flushed the toilet, drained the sink, taken a shower, or done some laundry, a clog may be forming in your drain pipes. Another cause may be a clog in your vent pipe. Gurgling noises occur when air in the drainage system can’t escape out through the vent pipe as it was intended to do; instead, the air, which has to go somewhere, travels back up through the drain, where it emerges with a gurgling sound.
Every home needs drain cleaning on a regular basis to keep the plumbing operating properly. For most families in Manhattan, drain cleaning needs to be performed once every two to three years. If you can’t remember the last time you had your home’s drains cleaned, it’s probably time to call your Manhattan plumber and have them done.
Drain cleaning removes clogs that are forming. This is useful preventative maintenance. When pipes completely clog, the water and waste materials you’re trying to have leave your home can’t – the result is messy, backed up sinks, showers, and even toilets!
