When Is Repiping Necessary

October 11, 2021 by Boris Mechanical

As a home owner, you know that maintaining the property can be quite an expense. In terms of home plumbing issues, a main concern is your pipes. These can be the pipes that carry water into your home, or the pipes that carry water and waste material away from the home. When there’s a problem with the pipes, your New York City plumber may present you with two options: pipe repair or repiping.

Repiping is exactly what it sounds like: the old pipes are removed and new pipes are installed in their place. This can be a very involved process, and home owners often wonder if they can get by with pipe replacement instead.

Here are three circumstances when repiping is necessary:

You have frequent leaks.

Your pipes are not supposed to leak, not even a little bit. If you’re seeing leaks happening frequently – more than three times in any six month period – it’s time to talk to your New York City plumber about what’s going on. It’s very important to get leaky pipes addressed before winter’s cold temperatures arrive.

You have very old pipes in your home.

Older homes have their charms, but they also have their problems, particularly in the plumbing department. If your home was built before 1970, there is a very real possibility that your pipes contain out-of-date materials. Some of these materials pose health hazards, while others just are getting near the end of their useful life. These older pipes can’t be repaired anymore, and will need to be replaced.

Rust is on the inside and outside of your pipes.

Older pipes made of iron and steel corrode over time. If you have rusty colored water when you run your hot and cold faucet, this is a good sign that there’s corrosion inside the pipes and repiping is required.
