How to Have a Better Vacation Without Even Trying

July 13, 2021 by Boris Mechanical

Summer is finally here. If you’re planning on getting out of the city to have a little fun, take a moment to read these three tips from plumbers in New York City. A few minutes of preparation before you leave can save you from coming home to an expensive, upsetting disaster!

Vacation Tip #1: Make Sure Nothing is Leaking Before You Leave

A dripping faucet, water spot on the ceiling, or other signs you have a leak are nothing to ignore. What appears to be a small problem can develop into a catastrophe while you’re happily sipping margaritas on a beach somewhere. Large leaks are very expensive – wait till you get that water bill! – as well as potentially damaging your home permanently. If you see a leak, have your New York City plumber check it out. Having it repaired means you can enjoy your vacation stress free.

Vacation Tip #2: Turn the Thermostat Up

There’s no sense running the AC 24/7 when no one at home needs the cool air. Raising your thermostat even a few degrees – from 70 to 75, for example – can help reduce the wear and tear your AC unit is experiencing. Make things even better by making sure all of your curtains and drapes are closed (it helps it stay cooler indoors that way) and that all doors and windows close tightly.

Vacation Tip #3: Check the Sump Pump

In the event of a strong summer storm, your sump pump is the first line of defense against a flooded basement. You can check your sump pump by pouring a few gallons of water into the sump pit. Your sump pump should remove this water quickly, efficiently, and quietly. If it fails to do so, get in touch with your New York City plumber about having the sump pump replaced. That way, you can enjoy your vacation even if you know it is raining back home.
