I Think My Pipes Are Leaking – What Do I Do?

March 14, 2022 by Boris Mechanical

“When I opened up my water bill, my jaw hit the floor!” Stephanie said. The East Village homeowner had never seen the bill that high in her life. “So I asked my sister, what should I do? And she said, you have a leaky pipe.”

What are the Signs of a Leaking Pipe in Your Home

One sign your pipes are leaking is an unexpectedly high water bill. If your bill spikes and you have no idea why, it’s definitely time to investigate what is going on. Even small leaks can result in quite a bit of water being lost, and when you’re paying for every drop that adds up quick!

Look for Puddles or Water Damage

To find out where the leak might be, you’ll want to look around your home for any puddles or signs of water damage. Smart places to look for puddles include around the toilet, under sinks, in the laundry room, around dishwashers, refrigerators, and other appliances, by the water heater, and in the basement or any crawl spaces where you can see the exposed plumbing.

Signs of water damage include staining, buckling, wrinkling, or otherwise changing the wall, floor, or ceiling. Keep your eyes and nose open for any signs of mold and mildew: they grow quickly in damp settings.

Need help finding the leak? Your East Village Plumber can help.

What to Do About Leaking Pipes

Pipes can develop leaks for a number of reasons. Sometimes the pipe itself is very old and deteriorates. When pipes freeze or get close to freezing, they can develop small cracks that leak. Whatever the reason, when a pipe in your home is leaking, you will need to have it repaired right away. Leaky pipes are expensive and all of that water is causing serious damage to your home.

When you have the plumbers near East Village on site in your home, they will be able to determine the size and scope of the leak and present you with your repair options. Generally a simple repair is all that is needed to restore the integrity of your pipes and stop the leak!
