Why Do Sprinkler Systems Fail? A Guide for NYC Business Owners

June 13, 2023 by Boris Mechanical

If you own a business in New York City, you’re likely aware that you’re required to have a fire suppression system. Sprinkler systems are there to protect your business & any other occupants of the building from a fire. They are essential safety equipment. But sometimes they fail.

Why do sprinkler systems fail?

As New York City plumbers, we install sprinkler systems. We also maintain these systems and help business owners address any issues that may occur. When it comes to the question what makes a sprinkler system fail, we have some surprising answers for you.

#1 Reason Sprinkler Systems Fail: They’re Not Turned On

Nearly two out of three sprinkler system failures are due to the fact the sprinkler system is not turned on. Why would a sprinkler system be turned off? The shut offs often occur when there’s construction, such as renovations, occurring within a property. It’s also often common that this happens during a time when the building is vacant.

Our tip to NYC business owners, especially those who have recently moved into a new space, is to check that your sprinkler system is in fact turned on. This will take you only a few moments and can save you from a lot of heartbreak and grief later. Not sure how to check your sprinkler system? Your NYC plumber can help.

#2 Reason Sprinkler Systems Fail: Somebody Messed With It

Another common reason New York City sprinkler systems fail is that someone interfered with the system in such a way that prevented it from working. Now you may say, who would do such a thing?

One answer is firefighters. If you’ve had a fire in the premises but help arrived before the sprinkler system deployed, the fire crews or other persons may have disabled the sprinkler system.

Another issue that can prevent your sprinkler systems from working properly is when someone builds or installs objects in such a way that the sprinkler’s heat sensors are blocked, preventing them from deploying as needed.

#3 Reason Sprinkler Systems Fail: Lack of Maintenance

The first two reasons -a sprinkler system not being turned on or being rendered inoperable through human interference – account for 80% of all sprinkler system failures. The remainder are attributable to poor maintenance. Having a licensed Master Plumber regularly inspect and maintain the sprinkler system is the best way to avoid this issue!
