“Every month, you know what your water bill is going to be,” Eddie said. “More or less, anyway. Some months it’s a little more, some months it’s a little less, but you generally know what you’re going to be paying.” Eddie got the shock of his life when he opened a recent water bill. “Let’s just say it was more than double what I was expecting,” he said. “I was not a happy camper.”
Discovering why the water bill had suddenly spiked was easier said than done. “I went around to every apartment and asked the tenants if they were having any problems – leaking faucets, toilets that wouldn’t stop running, stuff like that. Everybody said no. I’ve got good people in here,” Eddie added, “the type who would call me the minute there’s a problem. So that’s when I had to do a little digging.”
Working with his NYC plumber, Eddie did some investigative work. It turned out that one of the building’s water supply lines had developed a fairly significant leak, wasting hundreds of gallons of water. Leaks are one of the most common causes of unexpectedly high water bills; in addition to water supply line leaks, problems can occur throughout the building. In the kitchen, vulnerable points include sink water supply lines, the dishwasher, or refrigerator ice maker supply lines. Bathroom plumbing to keep an eye on include the supply line for the toilet, bathroom sink, and shower or bathtub.
“I always thought a huge leak would be an obvious problem,” Eddie said. “But it turns out that that’s not always the case.” He credits his NYC plumber will helping him quickly address the problem. “The repair was done in less than a day. Now I can sleep at night, knowing my next water bill won’t be such a nightmare!”
