Winter’s Coming: 3 Ways to Get Your Home Plumbing Ready for Cold Weather

November 9, 2018 by Boris Mechanical

Home plumbing problems that don’t seem like a big deal during the summer can suddenly become a concern when winter arrives. That’s because water expands when it freezes, turning small leaks into large ones. Burst pipes are a huge concern for any homeowner, as they’re messy and cause a lot of damage. Luckily, there are three things you can do right now to get your home’s plumbing protected against the worst winter weather:

1) Have Leaking Faucets, Dripping Shower heads & Other Small Plumbing Problems Fixed

As plumbers in New York City, we get it – everybody’s busy, who has time to have a minor plumbing problem fixed? The thing to understand is that leaking faucets & dripping shower heads mean you’ve got a leak somewhere. This is costing you money – more than you might imagine – as every drip that slides down the drain winds up on your water bill! Even more important, these leaks are vulnerable points in your home’s plumbing. When the temperature drops and water freezes, small holes and cracks in your pipes become larger, causing increased water loss & damage to your property. Have small leaks fixed now.

2) Protect Your Pipes From Freezing

If you know your pipes have frozen before, or you’re worried about pipes in vulnerable areas – think beneath your sink or against exterior walls – protect them from the cold with insulation tubes. This is a DIY task if you’re moderately handy, or have your NYC plumber do it for you. The insulation helps your pipes maintain a temperature warm enough to prevent freezing. If you’ve had new plumbing installed or plumbing repairs done recently, it’s a good best practice to insulate those pipes.

3) Have a Plan for Winter Plumbing Emergencies

Prepare yourself for winter’s worst weather by knowing who you’re going to call if you do have a plumbing emergency. Choose a New York City plumber who’s experienced, who offers 24/7 emergency service, with a reputation for excellence. Then program their contact information into your phone. You may never need it, but if the opportunity arises – pipes frozen, toilet overflows, or other plumbing trouble – you’ll be glad you’re prepared.
