What Causes Low Water Pressure: Ask a Bronx Plumber

June 22, 2018 by Boris Mechanical

Low water pressure is one of the most common plumbing concerns in the Bronx. As plumbers, we hear it all of the time: how come we have no water pressure? Is a sudden loss of water pressure a serious problem? When should I call a plumber about low water pressure?

Not all low water pressure problems are the same. It’s important to know if you have low water pressure in only one place – the shower is a common example – or throughout your home. If you have low water pressure at a single point, this can be a sign of an obstruction at that fixture. Shower heads can become clogged by mineral deposits from your water – these build up over time, and can significantly reduce the water volume and pressure. Cleaning the shower head can sometimes alleviate this issue. If it doesn’t, call your Bronx plumber. Something else is causing this problem, and it may be a serious issue like a leaking pipe that’s hidden within your walls, slowly causing damage and costing you money.

A sudden drop in water pressure throughout the home is another question. In the Bronx, roadwork and construction projects sometimes interrupt the water supply. Water main breaks happen. In these instances, while the situation is serious, it’s not an issue you need to call your Bronx plumber for. Your building water pressure will return to normal after the infrastructure issues have been addressed.

If there is no issue with the water supply in your neighborhood, a sudden drop in water pressure throughout the home can be a very serious problem. It’s important to call your Bronx plumber right away, as you may have a severe leak. Be aware that the city charges you for all the water used by your residence, even if that water is leaking and you don’t even know about it. You may have seen this news story about a Brooklyn couple who now have a $44,000 water bill. You don’t want to be in that situation! If you know or suspect you have a water leak, have it repaired right away.
