NYC Drain Cleaning: What You Need to Know

September 14, 2018 by Boris Mechanical

A clogged kitchen sink drain can make cleaning up after meals frustrating and difficult. Refrigerators and dishwashers also need to drain. In the bathroom, there are drains in your shower or bath, sink, and toilet. Laundry and utility rooms also have drains. There are ways you can prevent your drains from clogging.

To prevent clogged drains, don’t put inappropriate items down them. Just because something fits through a drain pipe opening doesn’t mean it’s the best way to dispose of that item. In the years we’ve been providing plumbing in NYC we’ve found all sorts of things in drain pipes that never should have been there. From disposable razors and toothbrushes through silverware and countless kids toys, these items accumulate grease, debris, and particulate matter that can result is serious stubborn clogs. Other items, such as hand towels, baby diapers, feminine hygiene products, and stuffed animals can also cause drain pipes. We often see these type of items in clogged toilets.

Another way to prevent clogged drains, specific to the kitchen sink, is to avoid putting grease down your drain. Many people are cooking healthier food, but if you’ve given in to temptation and fried some chicken, use a container that closes securely and toss that grease in the garbage. The reason you want to do this is that grease solidifies when it’s cold. Solid chunks of grease can block water and other materials from passing through your drain pipes. Also, grease clings to the inside of pipes, and other items stick to the grease. Clogs are the inevitable result. Don’t pour grease down your drains!

If your drains are clogged, you’ll know it. One way to tell if your drains are clogged is to watch the speed at which water drains down the pipe. If your sink or shower isn’t draining quickly, or at all, it’s time to call your NYC plumber. Unfortunately, sometimes a clog can catch us by surprise. If your toilet or appliances overflow, a clogged drain is the likely culprit. Drain cleaning can fix these issues!
