Springtime Plumbing Problems Hit New York City

March 11, 2021 by Boris Mechanical

As nice as it is to see spring weather arrive, warmer temperatures can contribute to some common plumbing problems. We talked to the best New York City plumbers and asked them what homeowners need to be watching out for. Here’s what they had to say:

Spring Plumbing Problem #1: Clogged Drains

While sinks and toilets can clog at any time during the year, New York City plumbers get the most calls for clogged drains in the spring. That’s because plant life – most especially trees – comes out of a dormant winter state and starts to grow again once the days start getting longer. A tree doesn’t have to be right next to your house for its root system to penetrate and clog your sewer line. Get ahead of the game by having your NYC plumber hydro-jet your drains at the beginning of the spring. This will take out the roots before they really have a chance to get established.

Spring Plumbing Problem #2: Sump Pump Failure

Located in the basement of your home, your sump pump is there to remove any water that accumulates beneath your house. This water can get there due to heavy spring rains, stress runoff, excess groundwater, and a number of other reasons. The sump pump is a piece of equipment no one ever thinks about until it stops working – but by then you have a potentially expensive mess on your hands! Test your sump pump by filling the sump pit (this is the hole the sump pump sits in) and seeing how long it takes to remove the water. It should happen fairly quickly and quietly. If not – call your NYC plumber for sump pump replacement right away.

Spring Plumbing Problem #3: The Mystery of the Leaking Pipes

If you suddenly discover your water bill getting larger and larger for no reason at all, call in your plumber to investigate. Rising unexplained water bills are often the first indication that you have a leaking pipe. If your pipe froze and thawed without you knowing, tiny cracks and flaws can develop in the pipe. You’ll want to have this addressed quickly by a licensed master plumber to prevent your property from being damaged.
