Why Is The Sink Draining Slowly?

January 28, 2022 by Boris Mechanical

As a plumber near Bayside, one of the problems we frequently hear about is slow drains. This could be the drain for the kitchen sink, it could be the drain in the bathroom sink or bathtub. It could be the laundry room drain or even the drain in the utility room or garage. People want to know why their drains are so slow, and if a slow drain is a big deal.

Let’s talk about what is going on. Drain pipes aren’t complicated. All they do is carry water from the point you use it in the home to be disposed of. The only thing drain pipes need to do to be absolutely perfect is stay wide open and clear, so the water can be carried easily away.

Now here’s the problem: other things besides water finds its way down the drain pipe. The most common items are exactly what you might expect – soap, shampoo, conditioner, beauty products. Also common: dirt, hair, grease, grime. Anything that comes off of your body while you’re washing up goes down the drain. In the kitchen, the drain situation can include food waste.

All of this stuff should be carried away with the waste water. But sometimes it’s sticky. Sometimes materials start building up to such a point where it becomes impossible for the water to pass through as quickly as it used to. This is when you’re going to see your drains slowing down. When the material accumulates to such a degree that water can not pass at all, you have a clog.

What To Do When the Drain Starts To Slow Down

When your drain starts working slowly, it’s your opportunity to address the situation and prevent an inconvenient, messy clog. Call your Bayside plumber, and tell them you need drain cleaning. Drain cleaning is exactly what it sounds like: the plumbers come to your house and using specialized equipment get the built up stuff that’s blocking your pipes cleaned out. It’s a simple process that most households need every two to three years.
