Did Your DIY Plumbing Project Get Way Out of Hand?

May 9, 2022 by Boris Mechanical

“When you watch someone installing a new sink on YouTube, it doesn’t look that difficult,” Greg said. The Queens homeowner had a downstairs half-bath that needed updating, and he’d decided to do the job himself. “But in those videos, it doesn’t show what happens when unexpected problems occur.”

While working on his bathroom sink replacement, Greg discovered that the drainage pipes were in much worse shape than he’d anticipated. “As in crumble in my hands bad,” Greg said. “Everything wound up in pieces, and now I have no idea what to do next.”

When DIY Projects Get Out of Control – Call for Help!

DIY Plumbing Projects have a tendency to start out simple and become complicated fast. This is especially true on older homes, where you may encounter piping that’s done in an unusual or one of a kind fashion. If you’re not really clear on how to do the repair even in an ideal setting, it becomes even more challenging when you’re dealing with some non-standard configuration.

If you’ve been working on a home plumbing repair job and you’re stuck, frustrated or overwhelmed, know that it’s okay to call your local plumber for help. Nobody’s going to judge you or give you grief for trying to do the repair yourself. We all run into situations that surpass the skill set we currently have. If you want to continue learning the art of home plumbing, we’re going to applaud that effort.

But in the meantime, you need your bathroom to work. The most efficient, reliable way to get the job done is to have an experienced professional take over for you. In Greg’s scenario, there was a good amount of drain pipe that had to be replaced, including sections behind walls and in the basement – much more of a project than he was prepared to take on.

“The good news is that once the drain pipe situation was dealt with, installing the new sink did turn out to be a pretty simple project,” he explained. “So it all worked out in the long run.”
