Do Drips Really Matter?

July 18, 2022 by Boris Mechanical

“Every faucet in our home drips, and it’s making me crazy,” Matti said. “My husband says it’s not a big deal. But I want to call in a plumber and have it dealt with. Who’s right?”

Well, we’re plumbers in East Flatbush, not relationship counselors. So we’re going to limit our advice to the impact constantly dripping faucets can have on your home, your budget, and the environment.

Dripping Faucets Leak A Lot of Water

When plumbers look at a dripping faucet, they’re likely to count how many drips occur in a minute. A typical leaking faucet will drip about ten times in a minute. This results in the loss of about a gallon of water per day. That’s thirty gallons in the typical month – per faucet. If you have just three faucets in the home (kitchen sink, bathroom sink, shower) that’s 90 gallons of wasted water per month. For the typical NYC family, that’s more than three day’s worth of water just dripped away.

Dripping Faucets Cost You Money

When you pay for water in NYC your bill is based on 100 cubic feet of water. That’s 748 gallons. If you’re wasting 90 gallons of it, that means 12% of your water bill is literally water you’ve never used and receive no benefit from. That 12% is money you’re spending to get absolutely nothing – except potential damage to your household.

Which brings us to our next and most important point:

Dripping Faucets Can Damage Your Home & Your Stuff

A steadily dripping faucet introduces a lot of moisture into your living environment. Moist environments are great for growing mold and mildew – two common allergy triggers. Some people get very sick from being exposed to mold and mildew. Mold and mildew will wreck your soft surfaces – think fabric, clothing, upholstery – as well as damaging the actual structure of your building.

Having dripping faucets fixed is a relatively affordable fix your East Flatbush plumbers can do for you. As a result, you’ll waste less water – good for the planet. You’ll spend less money on your water bill – good for your budget. And you won’t have to worry about your living space getting filled up with mold and mildew – good for you!
