Why Are My Pipes Humming & Should I Be Freaking Out?

February 13, 2023 by Boris Mechanical

“So I actually just bought my home here in Queens Village. It’s so cute,” Macy said. “Of course I invited my bestie from college to come stay the weekend. And she’s the one who said “What is up with your plumbing?”

“I actually couldn’t hear it until she pointed it out, but when you are in the bathroom, you can hear this humming noise. And I thought it would be the electricity, which was terrifying, but when you actually put your head next to pipes under the sink and going into the washing machine, there is this persistent faint humming sound. Is this serious? Why is it happening?”

Humming Pipes: The Cause Revealed

As Queens Village plumbers, when we hear a homeowner talking about humming pipes, the first question we ask them is how is the water pressure in the home. The answer is likely to be fantastic, wonderful, great – because humming pipes are often a sign that the water pressure in the home is too high. The humming may even become louder when the water is running.

Is overly high water pressure a serious issue? We would say yes, absolutely, and here is why: your home plumbing system is designed to operate within specific parameters. When the water pressure is too high, that means your pipes, joints, fittings, and fixtures are all being pushed to work at greater than normal capacity. This often leads to failures, which can mean leaks, damaged pipes, and potentially damage to your home’s interior.

When the water pressure is too high, the first job of your Queens Village plumber is to determine why that is happening. Your plumbing will be tested from the point where it connects to the city’s water supply right through to the faucets. Once the cause has been identified – it can often be a blockage or other complication leading to the increased pressure – it can be fixed and you can enjoy a quiet home with no humming pipes!
