Frozen Pipes & Other Cold Weather NYC Plumbing Problems

February 11, 2017 by Boris Mechanical

Heavy snows and cold temperatures can contribute to plumbing problems. A big concern for many is frozen pipes. How do you know if your pipes are frozen – and if your pipes are frozen, what can you do about it?

Pipes freeze when they’re exposed to sub-zero temperatures for a prolonged period of time. Pipes in exterior walls and basements are most prone to freezing, particularly if those areas are not insulated very well. Pipes can freeze partially or completely. When pipes are completely frozen, they can burst, which results in water and icy slush cascading inside your building. This can create a very hazardous situation, in addition to a huge mess. If your pipes have burst, you need to call your 24 hour plumber in NYC immediately.

How do you know if your pipes are frozen? The first sign many NYC homeowners become aware of is the fact they have no water coming from the tap. If you have no water, or only a tiny trickle of water, and exterior temperatures are 32 degrees or colder, there is a good chance your pipes are frozen. Look at your pipes. If they’re covered with a layer of frost, you have frozen pipes.

What can you do about frozen pipes? If your pipes are frozen but haven’t burst, you’ll want to call your 24 hour plumber in NYC. They will be able to thaw the pipes safely and are prepared to address any leaks that have formed as part of the pipes freezing. These leaks can be very tiny, but even a small leak can result in lots of water spilling out into your home. This causes damage and costs you money. Your NYC plumber can fix these leaks quickly, so you don’t have to deal with the mess, stress or expense.

The best time to call for help with your frozen pipes is when you discover the problem. Don’t delay!
