Eliminating Plumbing Leaks Key To Stopping Mold Growth

October 12, 2015 by Boris Mechanical

Mold and mildew are two problems the NYC home owner just doesn’t want. Both can contribute to allergies and other health problems, some of which are quite serious. The best way to deal with mold is to prevent it from growing in the first place, and that may mean taking a look at your plumbing.

Mold requires three essential elements to grow and thrive. The first is something to eat: mold grows on wallboard, cabinetry and other surfaces because it is consuming those items. The second is warmth. No one has a mold problem in Antarctica because it’s way too cold there. New York City is another question. We keep our homes fairly warm, and where we’re comfortable, so are mold spores. Finally, mold needs moisture.

There are at least three ways excessive mold gets into the home and contributes to mold growth. The absence of an effective vapor barrier and inadequate guttering are two big ones; the third, which we’re going to focus on today, is plumbing leaks.

As your NYC plumber, I can tell you there are several common types of leaks that occur. In the kitchen, you can have a leaky faucet, leaks in your sink’s water supply lines, leaks in the drain pipe, leaks surrounding your garbage disposal, leaks in the plumbing leading to your refrigerator’s ice maker, the drain pipes for the same and more. ask dr sears In the bathroom, there can be leaks in the shower or bath, the bathroom sink, and the toilet. Leaks also occur in heating systems and water heaters.

Leaks are problematic in many ways. Water running freely can damage your possessions or home; the excessive moisture a leak creates can contribute to mold growth. If you’re struggling with mold, or you want to make sure mold never has a chance to get started in your home, have all leaks repaired by your NYC plumber right away.
