How to Tell When You Really Need a New Water Heater

March 8, 2020 by Boris Mechanical

Hot water is like fresh air – most people never think about it unless there’s a problem. But it only takes one icy cold shower to convince most folks that something needs to happen.

When it comes to water heaters, there’s often a question of repair or replace. As New York City plumbers, we can tell you there’s no one answer to every situation.

Water Heater Repairs

Water heaters can in some instances be repaired – for example, gas water heaters may have issues with the pilot light, thermocoupler, or the gas control valve. If you have an electric water heater, which is the case for most NYC residential properties, the issue could be the thermostat or heating elements. Repairing these issues means you get your hot water back!

The question “How much does it cost to have a water heater repaired?” does come up. And this is where we get into the discussion of whether it’s better to repair or replace a water heater. Our role is not to make this decision for you. What we can do is provide you with an estimate of what the repair costs will be, compared to replacement costs, and then talk about other factors that may influence your decision, such as how long you would be able to expect your water heater to last after those repairs have been performed, as well as the energy efficiency of your current water heater.

Other times, water heater replacement is your only option. Leaking water tanks are the most common example – any time your tank is compromised, repair is the only option. The useful life of a water heater is generally between 10-15 years, so if your water heater is older than that, your New York City plumber will generally recommend replacement.

The benefits of replacing your water heater can be twofold. First, you will have reliable hot water. Second, you may wind up saving money. Modern water heaters are more energy efficient than older models. This is good news for your budget and for the planet!

Water heater replacement in NYC doesn’t have to be expensive. Choose a professional licensed Master plumber with a reputation for excellence. Our team is prompt, friendly, and very respectful of your property.
