NYC Plumbing Questions: What Happened to the Hot Water?

March 21, 2018 by Boris Mechanical

When you’re counting on your morning shower to be toasty warm and it’s icy cold, there’s a problem. There are a number of hot water problems you could have. One is having no hot water at all; the second is having water that gets hot, but not hot enough; a third is when the hot water is much too hot; a fourth is when the water gets to the proper temperature but there’s not enough of it.

NYC Plumbing Insights: Why Do Water Heaters Fail?

All of the previous concerns have one common cause: the water heater. In NYC, you may have a water heater in your home for your household’s use, or there may be a larger water heater shared by several homes. There are also tankless water heaters. The useful life of a water heater depends on a number of factors, including how much hot water is needed, the environmental conditions the water heater is stored in, and the quality of the water heater itself. That being said, the typical water heater will last between 10-15 years, barring extraordinary circumstances or heavy usage.

Water heaters fail in a few different ways. The tank where the water is stored can be compromised, developing a small or large leak. More common is a problem with the heating element or controls. While some water heaters can be repaired, in the majority of cases, water heater replacement is required. When this happens, it’s important that you choose a licensed NYC plumber. Water heater installation is not a DIY job, especially when you factor in the need to remove and dispose of the old water heater.

The cost of water heater replacement varies based on the type of water heater you’re replacing, if the new water heater is going into the same location as the old water heater, and if any additional plumbing work needs to be done to bring the new water heater online. To get an estimate of the costs of water replacement for your home, just give us a call. We’ll be happy to help!
